The incoherent ramblings of an overweight cyclist.

Week 2 – I don’t like Mondays!

TreacleJust back from completing my first training run of the week and boy it was hard work. My legs felt heavy, it was windy, the bike didn’t feel right, I didn’t feel right and it took a real effort to soldier on. For the first half of the ride something didn’t feel right at all, I just didn’t have seem to have any power in me. It felt like I was cycling through treacle. Eventually I came to the conclusion that I thought my seat was too low after realising that my new cycling shoes had a much thicker sole on them than the trainers I used to wear and I hadn’t adjusted the bike since getting them.

So, when I got to the top of the hill at the Kirkhill Golf Club I decided to stop and raise my saddle. I upped it by about a centimetre and when I got back on the bike it felt completely different, suddenly all felt right with the world and I could peddle again :) Needless to say the second half of the ride felt much better and I was able to put the power down to try and make up for lost time.

Day 7 – Weeks End

No commute again today.

  • Weigh in: 14st 8lb

No training route tonight either but I did cycle over to Eoan’s which takes in about half my normal route.

  • Distance: 8.8 miles
  • Time: 39 mins
  • Avg Speed: 13.5 mph
  • Max Speed: 26.2 mph

I was able to push a little harder as I knew I was only doing about half the distance but there’s still a long way to go, I definitely need to up my efforts in the coming weeks. I’ll put some time and effort into a proper training program this week which will hopefully help me focus on the task in hand.

GLAJOG ‘08 – Glasgow To John O’Groats

The date has been set and the charity sponsor page set up so there’s no going back now!

GLAJOG ‘08 – Glasgow To John O’Groats

  • Date: 2nd August 2008
  • Distance: 350 miles (ish – final route to be confirmed)
  • Time: 5 days (ish)
  • Participants: Ade & Geo
  • Charity: Leukaemia Research

More details to follow. In the mean time head on over to our fund-raising page and dig deep in aid of a very worthy cause!

Day 6 – Rush Hour

No commute today cos I was working from home. I had to head out a bit earlier tonight (so I could manage to sneak a few pints in with the boys after work) so I took a slightly different route to avoid the worst of the traffic.

  • Distance: 15.5 miles
  • Time: 1 hr 12 mins
  • Avg. Speed: 12.9 mph
  • Max Speed: 30 mph

This particular route included a nasty little 18% climb which comes straight out on to a main road without any levelling off which isn’t much fun when you’re clipped in! Thankfully I managed to steady myself without keeling over into the oncoming traffic and without rolling back down the hill.

Day 5 – The Match

Scotland v CroatiaIt was bitingly cold this morning but at least it was dry unlike the journey home. Bring on the warmer weather!

  • Weigh in: 14st 8lb
  • Commute to work: 14mins
  • Commute home: 15mins

No training run this evening due to a last minute phone call offering tickets for the Scotland v Croatia game at Hampden. It was a pretty dismal game but 1-1 against a quality side like Croatia is a good result.

Day 4 (and a bit) – Deflated

I went to get on my bike to cycle home only to find I had a flat front tyre :( What a bummer that was after extoling the virtues of my Kevlar lined tryes. Thankfully I’m a bit of a dab hand when it comes to changing inner tubes and I was fully kitted out with spare tube and CO2 inflater thingamyjig so I was quickly back on the bike and homeward bound.

The reason for the puncture?

Day 4 (and a bit) – The Resurrection

No progress this weekend due to my religious beliefs (or something like that). I spent most of the weekend in a drunken stupor at the alter of Guitar Hero. Rock on!

  • Weigh In: 14st 9lb

Amazingly I managed not to put on any weight even after my weekend of excess.

  • Commute to work: 15mins

I was still feeling a litter ginger this morning but the weather was looking good so I was determined to get on the bike. It was windy and cold but it felt good. I need to get some miles in this week so I’m going to ignore my cousin’s text message inviting me to a Beer Tasting. Now that is commitment!

Genesis Core 2.0

Genesis Core 2.0Along with my Scott Sub 20 I also picked up a Genesis Core 2.0 in April 2007. It’s not had as much use as the Scott but the few times I’ve taken it out in to the wilds I’ve been really impressed with it’s performance. I’m not exactly what you would call a seasoned mountain biker and the trails I’ve ridden are pretty timid in the grand scheme of things but it’s handled everything I’ve thrown at it with aplomb.

It got a rather good Review over at Bike Radar.

Glasgow to Rhu

This is the route I generally use to get to my folks house in Rhu. A fairly easy route really, except you need to watch out for the broken glass on the cycle path at Whiteinch. Oh, and that hill at the end is an absolute killer!

Bikely Routes

BikelyBikely.com – Bikely helps cyclists share knowledge of good bicycle routes.

I found this yesterday evening while browsing around on the Bike Radar site and I was pretty impressed with the ‘Create Route’ feature. I’d been messing around with google maps and google earth to create routes before but they’re a bit clunky really, not ideal for working out cycle routes. While Bikely obviously uses the google maps API to do what it does, it seems to do it in a much more bike friendly way and you can drag the route around effortlessly without having to add a zillion and one marker points.

There’s a whole community thing going on around it too for sharing and rating routes. There’s already a lot of good routes been added for the Glasgow area so I think I’ll be checking some of them out in the coming months.
