The incoherent ramblings of an overweight cyclist.

Week 2 - I don’t like Mondays!

March 31st, 2008

TreacleJust back from completing my first training run of the week and boy it was hard work. My legs felt heavy, it was windy, the bike didn’t feel right, I didn’t feel right and it took a real effort to soldier on. For the first half of the ride something didn’t feel right at all, I just didn’t have seem to have any power in me. It felt like I was cycling through treacle. Eventually I came to the conclusion that I thought my seat was too low after realising that my new cycling shoes had a much thicker sole on them than the trainers I used to wear and I hadn’t adjusted the bike since getting them.

So, when I got to the top of the hill at the Kirkhill Golf Club I decided to stop and raise my saddle. I upped it by about a centimetre and when I got back on the bike it felt completely different, suddenly all felt right with the world and I could peddle again :) Needless to say the second half of the ride felt much better and I was able to put the power down to try and make up for lost time.

  • Weigh in: 14st 7lb

The weight is still coming down slowly but surely. I’ve not noticed any difference in body shape or had to move to a new belt hole or anything yet but it’s progressing in the right direction which is good.

  • Route: Training Route
  • Distance: 17 miles
  • Time: 1 hr 23 mins
  • Avg Speed: 12.2 mph
  • Max Speed: 32.6mph

The avg speed has dropped slightly this time out but I’m putting that down to the effects of having my seat too low for the past few rides. It certainly felt much better after raising it and I’m confident that my average speed was considerably higher for the second half of the ride, so hopefully next time out there’ll be a marked difference.
